Auckland Eating Disorder Services

Out Patient Care

The Eating Disorder Services in Auckland is a regional service covering the Auckland, Waitemata, Counties Manakau and Northern Health boards. It is an outpatient facility only, operating out of Greenlane hospital, Greenlane, Auckland.  (See "Resources"). The Eating Disorder Service has a waiting list so the sooner you get on the waiting list the better. Referrals to EDS must be from your GP, Community Mental Health Centre or Hospital. They provide a package of services including individual therapy for the sufferer, family therapy for the sufferer and their family, nutrition advice from a dietician and advice for meal planning and medical consultation. The Eating Disorder Services programme is coordinated and it is very much a team approach to wellness. All the practitioners have regular meetings so the team works together devising strategies that will assist your child. For younger sufferers the Maudsley approach is used.
The Auckland Eating Disorder Service does not offer any inpatient facilities.

In Patient Care

-For under 16 year olds if your child is medically compromised, they will most likely admit him/her to Starship hospital. The Starship also has four beds dedicated to patients with an eating disorder and provides intense specialist treatment. Patients stay at the Starship until they are able to participate in the outpatient programme at EDS.

-For over 16year olds no inpatient care exists in Auckland for people with eating disorders. They will be admitted to a general  medical ward at an Auckland Hospital if they need to be medically stabilised. The only option for Specialist inpatient care currently available is an admission to Wesley Hospital Sydney.  Some people with long term serious eating disorders have been sent to Ashburn Private Clinic, Dunedin. All inpatient care is paid for by the District Health Board.
