Message from the Chair

“Recovery is a state, not a weight.” That was the first thought that came to mind when I began looking into the meaning of recovery for this month’s newsletter.

For many carers, the term recovery can feel unclear or even controversial, especially when so much of the focus in treatment can be on weight. At EDANZ, we see recovery as absolutely achievable and it means more than reaching a target on the scale. It means full freedom from the eating disorder: the rigid rules, the fear, the compulsions, and the constant mental noise around food and eating.

We understand how exhausting and frightening this journey can be. Supporting a loved one with an eating disorder is not easy. Recovery is not only possible, though, it is necessary. It is not enough for someone to appear physically “better” if the disordered thinking remains. Recovery means those thoughts and behaviours no longer have power.

Recovery is possible, at any stage, at any age, no matter how long the illness has been present. There is always a way forward.

I remember the moment my daughter came home one day and casually asked, “Mum, do we have any bacon?” It was such a simple question, but one she wouldn’t have asked before. In that moment, I knew we were getting there. Recovery is real.

Wishing you strength, clarity, and support as we head into this wet, wild, wintery season

Recovery from an eating disorder

Recovery from an eating disorder means different things to different people

Our first article is from the Australian organisation, National Eating Disorder Collaboration. It outlines the key components of recovery as being Nutritional, Physical, Psychological, Functional and Social, and goes into what recovery looks like in each of those domains.

Although the following article is written predominately for affected individuals, it could be helpful also for carers. The first point it makes is to “Notice and disarm the triggers”. Noticing the circumstances or the thoughts that kick off the disordered urges is very powerful.

And lastly, a wonderful article from our friends at Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) on how to support your loved one through lapses or relapses. A wonderful quote from the article: “Your calm, steady presence matters.”

EDANZ Support Group Meetings

Upcoming support group meetings

EDANZ believes parents/carers have unique abilities to support one another and we hold regular meetings to which you are warmly invited. Currently, we're joining together around the country once a month thanks to videoconferencing technology.

If you would like to participate in a virtual support group, please RSVP to info@ed.org.nz and we'll send you the link.

Upcoming meetings:

  • Wednesday, 2 July at 8pm
  • Wednesday, 6 August at 8pm

More information can be found on our website Parent/Carer Support Groups page

Remember: EDANZ helpline is open throughout the year – please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@ed.org.nz or leave a message on the phone 0800 2 EDANZ and we will get back to you as soon as we can. If you are concerned about the safety of someone, please ring 111 or go to the Emergency Department of your nearest hospital.

"When I rang EDANZ, I found not only compassion and understanding on the other end of the phone, but someone who had been where I was, someone who knew what we were going through.  They gave me practical help, information about the illness that had invaded our home and a way to kick it out."

Did you know EDANZ doesn't receive any regular funding? The EDANZ team are all volunteers who generously give their time to support families and the community.

Even a small donation from you will help us stay afloat.

We're so grateful to those who have already helped us financially this year... and those who continue to do so on a regular basis.
