Treatment Options for Eating Disorders

Because eating disorders are complex, no single treatment model works for every sufferer.

Over the years, medical professionals have tried a range of different approaches to treat anorexia and bulimia, with varying levels of success. Very few approaches have been rigorously studied for use with eating disorders, so it's important to understand what you're getting into when your loved one starts treatment.

Different doctors and clinics use differing types of treatment, although most will include a psychotherapy component of some kind. Severe eating disorders often need to be treated in a specialist inpatient settings. Fortunately, there are now residential beds in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch funded by regional DHBs.
